ABOUT DBT
Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology established the Department of Biotechnology in the year 1986 to give a new impetus to the development of the field of modern biology and biotechnology in India. In the last sixteen years of its existence the Department has promoted and accelerated the pace of development of biotechnology in the country. Through several R & D projects, demonstrations and creation of infrastructural facilities a clear visible impact of this field has been seen. The Department has made significant achievements in the growth and application of biotechnology in the broad areas of agriculture, health care, animal sciences, environment, and industry. The following are the mandates of the Department:
  • Support R & D and manufacturing in Biological
  • Identify and setup Centres of Excellence for R & D
  • Promote large scale use of Biotechnology
  • Integrated Programme for Human Resource Development
  • Establishment of Infrastructure
  • Facilities to support R & D and production
  • Serve as nodal point for the collection and dissemination of information relating to biotechnology
  • Promote University and Industry Interaction
  • Evolve Bio Safety Guidelines
  • To serve as Nodal Point for specific International Collaborations
  • Manufacture and application of cell based vaccines
  • Responsibility for Autonomous Institutions

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME
The Department of Biotechnology has introduced the aforesaid program. The Secretary, DBT requested Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore to co-ordinate and administer the implementation of the said programme. The Institute is successfully getting it done through the Society for Innovation and Development. The programme got started from December 2000 at a total project cost of Rs. 465.00 lakhs. The programme is intended only for Indian citizens. The purpose of the fellowship programme is to train scientists in frontier areas of research in Biotechnology at such institutions in India which are engaged in major biotechnological research activities.

ELIGIBILITY
The applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in Science, Engineering or M.D. or M.S. degree in any area of medicine with research interests in Biotechnology and Life Sciences and a good academic record. Those who have already submitted the Ph.D./M.D./M.S., thesis are also eligible to apply. The applicants should preferably be below the age of 40 years, and 45 years in case of women candidates. Persons already employed are also eligible to apply. However, their applications should be routed through their employers.

PERIOD OF FELLOWSHIP
The fellowship is awarded for a period of two years. However, in exceptional cases, based on the progress of research, and overall importance of the project of the Fellows, the fellowship may be extended upto 5 years. The evaluation and recommendation for the extension of the fellowship will be made by the host institution as per their internal guidelines.

The award of fellowships will normally start from 1st April or 1st October in a Calendar year. Accordingly, the selection of Fellows will be made twice a year.

NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIPS
Up to 75 Fellowships would be awarded every year. Depending on the success and utility of the programme, the number of fellowships to be awarded per year would be revised.

DETAILS OF THE AWARD
The Postdoctoral fellowship is a purely temporary assignment and is tenable for a period of 2 years. In exceptional cases, depending upon the progress of the research, the fellowship may be extended upto 5 years. Each fellow would be entitled to a stipend in the range of Rs. 22,000 - 24,000 per month and a research contingency grant of Rs. 50,000 per year, payable to the host institution. Candidates who are yet to be awarded the Ph.D./M.D./M.S degree, if selected, will be paid Rs. 18,000/- per month till the award of the degree. The fellows would also be entitled to HRA and other benefits as per the DST guidelines applicable to research fellowship/associateships. The fellowships cannot be availed at the same institution where the candidates have earned their Ph.D./M.D. degree. Candidates who are already in regular employment cannot avail the fellowship at their host institutions. However, there will be no restriction on them to receive the salary and other benefits while availing the fellowship in institutions other than their parent institutions.

MODE OF APPLICATION
Candidates may submit their application on plain paper along with bio-data, list of publications (attach reprints of 2 important papers), copies of certificates (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D./M.D.), one page synopsis of Ph.D./M.D. thesis, 2 letters of recommendation (academic). The applicant is advised to propose his/her place of work, name of the supervisor, enclose one page synopsis of proposed research which must be compatible with the on-going research of the proposed supervisor, and his/her consent, for availing the fellowship. They should also enclose a declaration stating that if selected for the fellowship, he/she will complete the tenure of the fellowship. However, they may be allowed to relinquish the fellowship only if accepting permanent employment in India. Those who had applied previously need not apply.

MODE OF SELECTION
The candidates will be selected based on their C.V. and performance in the interview. The interview will be held at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in May 2013 and candidates called for interview will be paid II class railway (non-AC)/bus fare by the shortest route from their home town. If the candidate accepts the fellowship, he/she must join the host Institution/University within a month's time.

Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowship 2012


Applications are invited for twenty “Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowships” instituted by
National Council for Science and Technology Communication, Department of Science & Technology.  The
fellowship recognizes Science Communicators with uniformly brilliant academic record and supports
innovative work in selected scientific institutions/universities/S&T based voluntary organizations under the
guidance of a senior science communicator.  These are full time fellowships and cannot be taken up with
any other assignment. These fellowships are meant to communicate science among various target groups
only and not for taking up basic research.  The candidates below 35 years on 31.12.2012 (relaxable by 5
years for Women candidates) possess a graduation or higher degree in science, engineering, medical
science, agriculture, information technology, mass communication, etc. from a recognized university. The
duration of the fellowship will be for one year and will comprise a Stipend of Rs.12,000/- per month
(Rs.16,000/- in case of a Ph.D. holders), an annual contingency of Rs.30,000/- and travel grant of
Rs.15,000/-. Mentors will receive an Honorarium of Rs.20,000/- in a year. Applicants are requested to
carefully study Annexure I to IV at website www.dst.gov.in before submitting the proposal.  The selection
will be made by a Committee of experts and decision of DST will be final.  Applications to be submitted in
the format by  30th November, 2012  to  Head (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology,

Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship 2012 Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes is formulated and funded by Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

The scheme has been initiated keeping in view the social background of the candidates for the deprived section of the society and to provide them opportunity to undertake advanced studies and research.

The objective of this award is to provide fellowships in the form of financial assistance to students belonging to SC/ST to pursue higher studies leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees in Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering & Technology,.

Target Group/Eligibility

SC/ST Candidates who have passed the Post Graduate examination in concerned subject and who desire to pursue research without JRF of UGC-NET or UGC-CSIR NET.

Eligibility for Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship 2012

1. The candidate should belong to SC/ST and should have passed the Post Graduate examination.
2. The selection will be made on the basis of merit of the candidates.
3. The candidate must get himself/herself registered for M.Phil./Ph.D at the first available opportunity but not later than within a period of two years from the receipt of award letter.
4. This period is not extendable. However, the actual payment of fellowship will be made with effect from the date of joining only.

1. Applications are invited in the prescribed format (Application Form) once in a year through advertisement in leading newspapers and Employment News.
2. The same is also uploaded in the UGC Website www.ugc.ac.in
3. The selection is made on the basis of merit and as per the procedure of the Commission.

Transfer of Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship 2012
  • The Fellow will be permitted to transfer the fellowship from one University/Institution/College to another University/Institution/College under special circumstances with prior approval of the UGC on the basis of “No Objection Certificate” from both Universities/ Institution/College.
  • However, the Fellow shall be relieved by the previous University/Institution/College only after his accounts are settled and unspent balance if any, refunded to the UGC.

Other Conditions for Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship 2012

The University/ Institution/College shall admit the fellows under RGNF scheme for research leading to M.Phil. or Ph.D. irrespective of the stipulated number of research students assigned to the Supervisor or the Department in the concerned subjects.
